Learning to Care During Story Time: Moral Education From the Perspective of Care Ethics
Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) (2009)
  • Colette Rabin, San Jose State University
Abstract
Care ethics highlights the importance of purposes in education, such as what kinds of citizens we foster. This study addresses teaching moral education from the standpoint of care ethics through stories. Through observations, interviews, and surveys in one school committed to care ethics, this study contributes to understanding how the philosophical perspective of care ethics can inform practice. Teachers engaged their students in dialogue over stories with open-ended questions concerning relationship, connections to students' experience in relationship, allusions to students’ realizations during relational challenges or altercations, and opportunities for students to put themselves ‘in the shoes of’ the characters. The students explained in rich detail that stories were instructive for teaching them about how to care for one another.
