Abstract
We define and show one way we teach the process of "joining in," where students learn to make non-judgmental associations and connections around a common text or piece of data. We then provide three storied examples of how we apply and teach this process of "joining in" in data collection, analysis, and reflection. For us, "joining in" is not only a tool, but is also a foundational approach to our teaching and research.
