In Defense of "Marginal" Melodies Among the "Trouvères": the Case of Thibaut IV de Champagne
Cahiers de recherches médiévales et humanistes - Journal of Medieval and Humanistic Studies (2013)
  • Christopher Callahan
Abstract
This article makes a case for including in future critical éditions of the trouvères, both electronic and print, the melodic isolates from codices such as Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, fr. 1591 (R) and Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, fr. 24406 (V). An argument based on melodic structure and poetic genre favors one particular mode of manuscript transmission while suggesting a possible origin for these unica, following which a number of them are analyzed from a structural and aesthetic point of view.
