What Students Learn From A Cultural Competency Service Learning Curriculum A Qualitative Analysis

Abstract
GOAL:
To examine learning outcomes of a required brief immersion curriculum using analysis of themes from reflective writing assignments.
HYPOTHESIS:
Service learning teaches students to recognize their own biases, experience empathy, value interpersonal relationships, and increased awareness of community resources.
SUBJECTS:
Physician Assistant Students from 3 cohorts: n=38 (2009), n=45 (2010), n=50 (2011)
CONCLUSIONS:
Service learning is associated with: Self-discovery, Empathy for individuals, Growth of interpersonal relationships, and Appreciation of community resources. Students can identify their own learning needs in developing cultural competence; and learning differs with population.
