Think Before You Collaborate

Abstract
Recent articles by Coffman and Arret in Searcher and Maxwell in American Libraries have called for a reevaluation of virtual reference; their articles cite rising costs, low usage, and technical glitches as reasons why libraries might want to pull the plug. Bailey-Hainer characterizes these claims as unfounded, at least as they apply to collaborative virtual reference; her article details the success of “Ask Colorado,” a statewide, multitype collaboration of 43 libraries. Bailey-Hainer cites that collaboration’s ability to serve a much widerrange of citizens, shared infrastructure, and collective marketing efforts as indications that collaboration makes virtual reference "more viable and affordable.
