Review of Arthurianism in Early Plantagenet England: From Henry II to Edward I by Renate Bauer

Abstract
Arthurianism in Early Plantagenet England ends with a concise conclusion (301–308), offers a sound bibliography (309–347) and an ever-helpful index (351– 363). The book fulfills what its author promised in the Introduction. To achieve this, Christopher Berard has read a large number of primary source texts, and he correlates them with facts from modern historiography with great ease. His understanding of historico-political events and relations is admirable and his ability to summarise them keeps the reader onboard. Berard reveals the importance that King Arthur had for the Plantagenet kings and leaves no stone unturned. Of course, a book of this size and range invites some criticism, but on the whole, I enjoyed reading it very much.
