Review of Arthurianism in Early Plantagenet England: From Henry II to Edward I by Cory James Rushton

Abstract
Christopher Berard’s invaluable study does not restrict itself to ‘assessing Arthur’s portrayal in those texts in which the figure plays an essential role (especially in Arthurian chronicle and romances)’ but also looks at ‘his numerous, yet lesser known, cameo appearances in law books, political treatises, religious writing, and conduct literature’ (pp. 3–4), during the Plantagenet era (stretching back to Count Henry of Anjou). While this book will be mined by literary historians, it is really and consciously a book of political history. It is difficult to imagine anyone doing a more thorough job in gathering such a wide range of material into a coherent, intriguing whole.
