Abstract
Overturning the long prevailing opinion that Edward III of England abandoned his Arthurian persona after the institution of the Order of the Garter in 1348–9, this article brings to light two mid-fourteenth-century chronicles demonstrating that Edward hosted a round table event at Windsor Castle on St. George's Day (23 April) 1358. The article argues that Edward revived his Arthurian imperial image so that he could collect a kingly ransom for the captured Jean II of France without sacrificing his own claim to be the ultimate sovereign of France. Additionally, this article explores the early historiographical tradition of the Order of the Garter and its relationship to the Middle English romance known as Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
