Abstract
This article argues that the ‘Breton Hope’ passage in Herman of Tournai’s Miracula Sancte Marie Laudunensis (ca. 1142) is not value-neutral as previously supposed; rather, it is a preaching exemplum that participates in the overall didactic function of the work. The episode is not a dependable indicator of local Cornish belief in Arthur’s survival ca. 1113, and it may even be a late accretion written in the context of the early dissemination of Geoffrey’s Historia regum Britannie (ca. 1138).
