Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this case report is to describe the coordination of care between a primary care physician and a chiropractic resident in a large private-sector integrated healthcare system for the evaluation and management of a patient with meralgia paresthetica.

Clinical Features: A 46-year-old male presented to an Advocate Aurora Health Center for a complete physical and evaluation of upper left anterior thigh numbness of two days duration.

Intervention and Outcomes: The primary care physician referred this patient to the chiropractic department for co-management. A comprehensive history and physical examination were conducted which revealed clinical findings consistent with meralgia paresthetica. A trial of chiropractic care was initiated as part of an evidence-informed approach. The care plan consisted of chiropractic manipulation therapy, soft tissue mobilization techniques, and ergonomic instruction. The patient responded favorably to interdisciplinary care and realized improved patient reported outcomes as assessed with a numerical rating scale.

Conclusion: The coordination of care processes demonstrated key themes of effective healthcare collaboration and resulted in full resolution of the patient's condition.
