About Dr. Christa J Porter

Dr. Christa J. Porter is an Assistant Professor of Higher Education Administration at Kent State University. Prior to Kent she served four years as a Fixed term Assistant Professor and Coordinator of the Student Affairs Administration masters program at Michigan State University. Her scholarship includes the development and trajectory of Black women in postsecondary education, college student development, and critical qualitative inquiry and methods. Dr. Porter is active in professional associations, namely ACPA – College Student Educators International, ASHE – Association for the Study of Higher Education, and NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, and has received national awards for her scholarship from both ACPA and NASPA. Specifically, she was selected as one of the 2017-2019 ACPA Emerging Scholars; and the Emerging Scholar in Residence for ACPA’s Coalition for Women’s Identities, 2016-2018.

She received her Ph.D. in Counseling and Student Personnel Services (with a specialization in College Student Affairs Administration) and an Interdisciplinary Qualitative Research Studies Certificate from the University of Georgia in 2013; a Master’s degree in Higher Education from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2006; and a Bachelor’s degree in Social Relations from Michigan State University’s James Madison College of Public Affairs and International Relations in 2004.
