About Dr. Christa J. Porter

Dr. Christa J. Porter (she/her) is the associate dean for the Graduate College & associate professor of Higher Education Administration at Kent State University. She critically examines policies and practices that influence the development and trajectory of Black women in higher education at diverse institutional types; college student development; and critical research and praxis in higher education and student affairs. Dr. Porter’s work has appeared in various refereed journals including Review of Educational Research; Journal of Higher Education; Gender, Work & Organization; Journal of College Student Development; Journal of Student Affairs Research and Practice (JSARP); and Journal of Diversity in Higher Education. Dr. Porter co-edited the award-winning book, Case studies for student development theory: Advancing social justice and inclusion in higher education (2020, Routledge). Additional texts include: Applying Black feminist epistemology, research, and praxis: Narratives in and through the academy (2023, Routledge); Small & mighty: Student affairs at small colleges and universities(2023, NASPA); and the New Directions for Student Services special issue, The state of Black women in higher education: A critical perspective 20 years later (2023, Wiley).

Prior to her tenure as a faculty member, she worked in a variety of student and academic affairs offices at different institutional types. Dr. Porter is active in professional associations, namely ACPA – American College Personnel Association, ASHE – Association for the Study of Higher Education, and NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, and has received national awards for her scholarship and teaching. Most recently in 2023, she received the ASHE Mentoring Award. In 2022, she and Dr. Janice A. Byrd received the AERA Review of Research award and in 2021, she received the College of Education, Health and Human Services’ Student’s Choice Teaching Award (nominated and selected by students) for the second time. In 2018, she was recognized as one of ACPA’s Annuit Coeptis Emerging Professionals, and in 2017 was selected as one of ACPA’s five Emerging Scholars.
