Abstract

Many universities and community colleges are adopting no-cost or low-cost materials but are struggling with how to sustain faculty adoption in such campus initiatives. Wiley, Williams & Hilton (2016), report, while sustaining OER development is being addressed, sustaining faculty adoption of OER material in courses is ignored. The next logical step in this process is investigating the continued adoption of these types of materials. At San Jose State University, the Affordable Learning $olutions initiative, is a CSU campaign that aims to reduce the cost of textbooks for students by assisting faculty in locating Open Educational Resources or low-cost non-traditional textbooks. This initiative has been operating for six years and has assisted a total of 89 faculty to date. In Spring 2018, we conducted a survey of past program participants to determine the following:

  • Are past faculty adopters still using no-cost open educational resources or low-cost materials in their courses?
  • If not, what were some of the challenges in sustaining the use of no-cost open educational resources or low-cost materials?
  • What are some of the rewards for faculty?
This presentation will present the findings of our survey to determine contributing factors to sustained faculty adoption of no-cost or low-cost materials. Investigators will also present on potential reasons for ending adoption of these materials and how to mitigate challenging factors to faculty adoption.
