About Chinua Akimaro Thelwell


Professor Thelwell’s research interests include Blackface minstrelsy as a popular culture export to South Africa; Performance Studies, and Hip-Hop Studies. Before arriving at William & Mary in 2012 as a Mellon Post-Doctoral Teaching Fellow in Africana Studies, he taught at Allegheny College where he was also a pre-doctoral dissertation fellow from 2009-2010. Professor Thelwell was awarded the Ford Foundation Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the University of Michigan from 2015 to 2016. He edited the 2016 collection Theater and Cultural Politics for a New World and has published in TDR: The Drama Review and Safundi: The Journal of South African and American Studies.
