Abstract
With the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT), the pervasiveness of social media and the expanding use of big data in healthcare—ethics, security, and privacy are more important than ever. This chapter discusses the importance of the difference between professional versus personal social media usage. It analyzes Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) legislation and its impact on nursing practice. Ethics prescribe what a person ought to do in terms of rights, obligations, benefit to society, and fairness. The chapter discusses the major cyber threats to healthcare as described by the Center for Internet Security. It reviews how ethics, privacy, security, and nursing informatics are relevant and tied together. The chapter finally examines the ethics of information privacy, security and security issues, and other issues related to the use or incorrect uses of technology as well as other technology challenges including robotics, in today's high-tech healthcare industry.
