About Cheryl Babcock

Cheryl R. Babcock, CFE, is a lecturer on the H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship faculty. She teaches undergraduate courses in Franchise Management, Small Business Management, Introduction to Leadership (online and ground), Principles of Management, and Great World Leaders (online). She is the former director of Executive Education and of the International Institute for Franchise Education in the H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She designed and developed executive education programs to help franchise leaders develop and enhance their capacity to take on 21st century franchise challenges and expand their knowledge and awareness of best practices in ethical franchising. She is a frequent speaker on franchising and entrepreneurship topics throughout the U.S. and around the globe, and she consults with prospective and existing franchisors and franchisees. She also serves as executive director and arrangements chair of the International Society of Franchising, a multidisciplinary, multi-national organization of academic teachers and researchers. 

Presently, in addition to teaching a full course load in the Huizenga Business College, Cheryl is also serving as the Huizenga faculty representative in NSU's new Razor's Edge Shark Cage program, which is a scholarship program for incoming freshman who demonstrate outstanding entrepreneurial potential. She had identified the four-year curricular and co-curricular requirements; developed a brochure and web page; secured an email address and designated phone number for the program and regularly monitors both to provide prompt responses to students; attends weekly logistical and leadership council meetings; developed a student-interview questionnaire and rubric for evaluating potential students; and, is developing an annual calendar and content for monthly Razors' Edge Shark Cage conclave meetings. 

Cheryl served on the International Franchise Association (IFA) Educational Foundation Board of Trustees and the Institute for Certified Franchise Executives (ICFE) Board of Governors. Formerly, she served on the IFA Membership Committee, the advisory boards of the Women’s Franchise & Distribution Forum (WFDF) and Sustainable Healthcare Enterprise Foundation (SHEF), and she was vice-chair of the IFA’s Economic Impact Study. She has authored numerous trade publication articles and book chapters and edited a book on the franchise industry. She is co-author, with Julie Bennett, of Franchise Times Guide to Selecting, Buying & Owning a Franchise. 

Cheryl received the 2008 Crystal Compass Award from the IFA’s Women’s Franchise Committee for “extraordinary leadership in franchising,” the Edwin M. Appel Prize from the Price-Babson College Fellows Program for “bringing entrepreneurial vitality to academe,” was named by Franchise Times as one of 20 to watch in both 2001 and 2004, and holds the Certified Franchise Executive? (CFE) designation. She received the 2003 IFA Free Enterprise Award honoring her work in strengthening and fostering the development of the free enterprise system worldwide. 

Cheryl has developed and taught courses on franchising/ entrepreneurship in Australia, Brazil, Finland, France, Mexico, the Philippines, Singapore, Slovenia, the United Kingdom and the U.S. She created a 40-hour franchise management and development course for the National Productivity Board in Singapore and taught the course there on three different occasions. She developed and led a five-day study mission for 20 members of the Singapore Florist Association. She was a member of the Editorial Board of Franchising Research: an International Journal and Success Magazine, and a member of the original panel of experts in a monthly feature of Success magazine entitled “Can This Business Be Franchised?” 

Cheryl was the founding director of the Institute for Franchise Management (IFM) at the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis, Minn., where she developed executive education programs for franchise professionals such as the Mini MBA in Franchise Management™, the Emerging Franchisor Conference, and the Keys to Explosive Franchise Growth Clinic. Under her guidance and direction, IFM received the Free Enterprise Award from the IFA in 2000. At St. Thomas Cheryl taught graduate-level courses in Franchise Management and Franchise Law, and undergraduate courses in Foundations of Entrepreneurship, New Venture Management and Entrepreneurship for Non-majors. She has spoken on franchising topics to UST visiting delegations from Australia, Brazil, China, Finland, India, Russia, Saxony, Siberia, the U.K. and Vietnam. Her non-academic credentials include having served as a field representative for Subway Sandwich and Salads and a Subway franchisee as well as an area director and franchisee of eMed-ID, LLC. 

Cheryl was the executive director of the International Center for Franchise Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). While at UNL, she wrote a series of 35 videotape study guides for a Franchise Management video course, taught courses and conducted seminars on franchising, entrepreneurship and small business management. She received her B.S. in Business Education, as well as her MBA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She received the Francis R. Loetterle Graduate Fellowship in Franchising and was a member of two honorary societies.
