About Prof. KWONG, Yim-tze Charles

Charles Kwong reads English at HKU and Oxford before studying Chinese literature at Yale. He had taught in the US, and holds a triple appointment as Professor of Chinese, Professor of Translation and Adjunct Professor of Philosophy. His research work includes Tao Qian and the Chinese Poetic Tradition, Women Writers of Traditional China (associate editor and translator),《朱淑真李清照詩詞逐字索引》(Concordances to the Poems of Zhu Shuzhen & Li Qingzhao),《武則天李冶薛濤魚玄機詩逐字索引》(Concordances to the Poems of Wu Zetian, Li Ye, Xue Tao & Yu Xuanji), and articles in English and Chinese covering classical Chinese poetry and fiction, comparative poetics, literary translation and the history of ideas. His translations include rendering the Chinese texts for a book of paintings into English.

As a creative writer, Professor Kwong’s work includes 22 collections of classical Chinese shi/ci totalling 2200 poems (《水雲詩草》,《春花集》,《秋月集》,《默絃詩草》,《夏木集》,《婉雯詩草》,《曉嵐詩草》,《冬青集》,《九思林》,《小千界》,《伯仲之間》,《十二霞峰》,《一日三秋》,《七雙河》,《淡影乾坤》,《莫愁湖畔》,《清風嶺》,《瀟湘月》,《東山零雨》,《翠韻芊芊》,《滄海浪跡》, 《千里晨芳》) and 2 collections of modern Chinese prose (《煙雨閒燈》,《隔岸留痕》). 

Professor Kwong is a recipient of the prestigious UGC Teaching Excellence Award (2014), and of multiple research and writing competitive grants from government and external bodies, including 2 Research Grants Council GRF grants and 13 HK Arts Development Council publication grants. He has also won a Research Excellence Award, 2 Teaching Excellence Awards and 2 Certificates of Merit in Teaching at Lingnan.

《三國演義》中詩詞的藝術意義

以詩詞歌詠穿插於敘事及描寫文字之間,是中國古典小說的一個藝術特色,基本上並不存在於西方小說之中。誠然,西方小說中也偶有一些加插詩篇和詩句的作品,例如Ann Radcliffe (1764-1823) 的The Mysteries of Udolpho或者Walter Scott (1771-1832) 的 「Waverley Novels」。然而這些個別例子中的詩作,在小說裏大致上起著裝飾性的作用,並沒有凝聚成一種真正的藝術生命力。因此,清初把《三國演義》修訂的毛綸(生卒年不詳)及毛宗崗(1632-1709以後)父子可以理所當然地指出「敘事之中夾帶詩詞,本是文章極妙處」,然而西方批評家對於一種詩文配合的體裁,基本上並不習慣,更遑論認同。無怪早期的西方漢學評論家,往往運用西方小說的標準去衡量中國古典小說中的詩詞作品的藝術價值。例如著名的英國翻譯家韋利,在翻譯《西遊記》的簡縮本時就把小說中絕大部份的「附帶性」詩詞刪掉,於取捨之間顯示出他對小說兼帶韻文的看法。又例如美國學者畢雪甫,在一篇名為〈中國小說的若干局限〉的文章裏,認為中國傳統小說中的詩詞部分,逐漸發展成一種「不必要的文學陳詞濫調」,祇能發揮著充當評語、「有詩為證」、拖延高潮或者徒為裝飾的作用。雖然今天的西方學者,已經沒有那麼明顯地批評中國古典小說中的詩詞,但是他們始終未能真正瞭解和闡釋其藝術作用。就是把毛評本《三國演義》翻譯為英文的學者Moss Roberts,在刊於譯本後的一篇分析這部小說及其版本的長篇論文中,也隻字不談詩詞的作用或增刪修訂的問題。連中國學者對於古典小說的大量批評文字,也比較少深入或全面探討韻文在小說中的藝術意義。本文擬以《三國演義》為例,對這個被相對忽略的課題,稍獻一點拋磚引玉的綿力。
