AbstractThis article discusses historical enquiry, which has always been central to the field of comparative politics. It examines the various methods of causal analysis and temporal analysis, and shows how historical analysts properly use historical data. This article shows that historical analysis embodies a distinctive set of techniques for the assessment of causal hypotheses, for the analysis of data, and for the study of temporal processes.
