This presentation will discuss the findings of a research study. The purpose of the study was to determine the impact of the Lexia Primary Reading Program (Lexia, 2004), a computer-based reading program, on the English reading skills of first grade students whose primary language is Spanish. All of the students who participated had been identified by the school district as EL learners. Students in the comparison group received an equal amount of computer time with non-literacy based instruction. Lexia Primary Reading Program (Lexia, 2004) was effective at increasing literacy skills in some of the areas measured (i.e., oral language, picture vocabulary, and passage comprehension). This presentation will discuss research findings and practical implications as well as recommendations for future research.
