Abstract

Skin conditions are common chief complaints among emergency patients and other outpatients. Cutaneous complaints account for 10% of outpatient medical visits and $36 billion in health care annually, including $20 billion in ambulatory care costs, $3 billion in prescription costs, and $2 billion in indirect costs (lost work days, etc.). More than two million emergency department visits annually are related to cutaneous complaints (approximately 2% of all emergency department visits).
