Abstract

The Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) supports the ethical conduct of research in emergency medicine. Emergency medicine researchers have the responsibility to carry out meaningful research that will benefit the public through improved emergency care. Since patients may assume additional risks and burdens by consenting to participate in research, emergency medicine researchers have an obligation to conduct clinical research in a scientifically sound manner and, in order to maximize the potential benefit of each subject’s participation, to report results to the larger scientific community through submission to peer-reviewed scientific journals. Every effort must be made to ensure that the reporting of scientific results is free from bias, coercion, or influences that may impair the open, complete, truthful, and accurate presentation of research findings.
