Abstract

Golden discusses Joseph Henry Hatfield's original magazine illustrations. The January 1892 issue of New England Magazine includes the story of Charlotte Perkins Gilman along with Hatfield's realistic-style illustrations, typical of the late 19th century. More than a century after its publication, Gilman's story has become a classic, but Hatfield remains largely unknown. Despite the volume of criticism since the 1973 Feminist Press republication of "The Yellow Wall-Paper" and its celebrated status as a feminist text, the original illustrations have not yet attracted significant scholarly attention.
