Abstract
Within the counseling profession, there has been an increased emphasis on the practice of mentorship to promote counselor identity, leadership, and social justice. Traditionally, dialogue surrounding mentorship centers on the dynamics of a hierarchical relationship and strategies aimed at helping individuals seek out mentorship based on personal needs. Feminist mentorship enhances this discussion by introducing the benefits of the egalitarian relationship, attention to diversity and the sociopolitical context, and the utilization of strategies aimed at challenging oppression. From teaching to supervision to other professional roles, feminist mentorship is not restricted to a structured format but rather a way of interacting with every mentee. Through these encounters, mentees (and mentors) become increasingly aware of their professional identity, capacity as a leader in the profession, and opportunities to promote social justice. Upon completion of this presentation, attendees will be able to define feminist mentorship and identify strategies for integrating this approach into their professional lives as counselor educators. Critical reflection and personal contributions will be encouraged using large group discussion and a small group activity.
