Abstract
In an effort to transform the classroom, feminist instructors have adapted ideals and strategies aimed at increasing students’ critical consciousness and collective action. Three significant considerations are key to implementing this approach: removing the hierarchy within the classroom, valuing diverse voices and experiences, and promoting social justice. Feminist instructors actively and critically engage in dialogue and reflection about what, why, and how they teach. Students are also encouraged to become active knowers who see themselves as co-authors of knowledge and agents of social changes. In order to implement feminist pedagogy, feminist instructors empower students to create mutual classroom goals, facilitate participatory learning, and develop critical thinking and social understanding. While many embrace this approach, others (e.g., students, colleagues, administration) may express conflict, discomfort, or resistance. Upon completion of this presentation, attendees will be able to (a) define feminist teaching, (b) identify benefits and barriers to implementation, and (c) identify ways to incorporate feminist tenants and challenge resistance. Critical reflection and personal contributions will be encouraged through the use of large group discussion.
