Urge to Merge: Adventures in WorldCat Duplicate Resolution
Music OCLC Users Group Annual Meeting (2020)
  • Casey Mullin, Western Washington University
Abstract
WWU has been a member of OCLC's Member Merge project since early 2017, part of
the second cohort of libraries to join. They have since become independent in the
books, scores and visual resources formats, with training planned for maps and sound
recordings. Mullin will discuss the overall contours of the Member Merge program, with
a focus on his experiences merging master records for notated music in OCLC
Connexion. Music bibliographic records are subject to wide (and often unexpected)
variations in title transcription, MARC content designation, and much more. Sifting
through long lists of suspected duplicates is time-consuming and often inconvenient,
but the cleanup process is immensely satisfying, and has demonstrable impact on the
shared database.
