Abstract

The lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered population (LGBT) is no longer completely invisible and uncomfortably denied in a traditionally heterosexist-dominant culture. Despite this change, discrimination, hostility, harassment, and even violence toward LGBT individuals persists. Only within the past 30 years have LGBT individuals been identified as a unique population deserving attention from educational researchers and policy-makers. Estimates of their proportion in the population range from 1% to 10%. Although a clearly defined group, LGBT individuals remain quite diverse-coming from all races, ethnicities, socio-economic levels, geographic regions, religions, and family constellations.
