Abstract
Nurse practitioners (NPs) in primary care often encounter patients experiencing cardiovascular dysrhythmias. These changes may vary in severity from minor to life-threatening including paroxysmal symptoms, emergent symptoms, and those seen after hospital discharge for stabilization. The knowledge required to manage these patients is extensive and depends on the experience and expertise of the NP. This article focuses on common treatment plans for common cardiac dysrhythmia management after hospital discharge, including a review of antiarrhythmic agents and the benefits and related risks of each pharmacologic class, which is especially useful for NPs who may not have a cardiology specialty.
