Welfare or Well-being? Work-sharing in Contemporary Political Debate in France and Sweden
(2001)
  • Carl Marklund, European University Institute
Abstract
This paper discusses work-sharing in contemporary public debate in Sweden as a reflection of deeper tensions between the modern and materialist values of the "efficient society" and post-modern and post-materialist attitudes of the "good life." It argues that these tensions--while acutely felt--have failed to become powerfully politicized in Sweden as of yet. Work-sharing will therefore likely remain marginal in the political agenda, in sharp contrast with for example France, where this politicization has successfully taken place. The paper discusses the role of the political culture-labour market nexus for the different outcomes in these two countries (in Swedish/French)
