Abstract

We briefly outline the institutional and cultural context for city and regional planning in Portland and explore the incorporation of health into planning processes with case studies of two initiatives: (a) the health element of the Environmental Impact Statement in planning for a new highway bridge across the Columbia River, and (b) the role of Health and Equity Working Groups in the development of a new comprehensive plan for the city of Portland. We find that there remain challenges in incorporating public health concerns in traditional land use and transportation planning.
