While there are many definitions of public health, key components include a community focus, a concern about disease prevention, and a commitment to health promotion. One of the most familiar definitions was first articulated in 1920 by C. E. A. Winslow, and was rearticulated by the Institute of Medicine in 1988: “The science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting health and efficiency through organized community effort.” (p. 29).
