This post looks at research by Wampler and Touchton on the positive effects of citizen participation in local politics. Based on data from nearly 20 years of participatory budgeting, they argue that the process produces changes in government spending patterns, decreases infant mortality rates and, perhaps most importantly, that these effects grow stronger over time. Their findings were published in an academic article in Comparative Political Studies.
