About Brian Schmisek

Brian Schmisek is the Director of the Institute of Pastoral Studies at Loyola University
Chicago. He is also an Associate Professor at Loyola, having joined the faculty in 2012.
Prior to his time at Loyola, Dr. Schmisek was the Founding Dean of the School of Ministry at the University of Dallas since 2007. He served for five years (2002-2007) as the Director of the Institute of Religious and Pastoral Studies, when it was renamed the School of Ministry. The School of Ministry grew to include graduate programs, undergraduate programs, continuing education, and a nationally recognized annual ministry conference that still draws over 5000 participants each year.
Dr. Schmisek earned his Ph.D. in Biblical Studies from The Catholic University of America in 2002. He holds an M.A (Classics) from The University of Mississippi and an M.A. (Theology) from The Catholic University of America. His B.A. is from North Dakota State University.
Dr. Schmisek publishes books, articles, and adult education materials accessible to an educated lay audience and rooted in solid scholarship. His interests are in bridging the gap between academy and pew.
His most recent book is Resurrection of the Flesh or Resurrection from the Dead: Implications for Theology (Collegeville, MN: Liturgical Press, 2013).
