About Brian T. Kopp

Dr. Kopp is an assistant professor at UNF. In the 1980s while a student at New Mexico State University he worked at the NASA White Sands New Mexico ground station that operates the NASA Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System. He went on to pursue an MSEE and then a Ph.D in EE at NMSU while studying and teaching as a NASA Research Fellow. Dr. Kopp has started several companies including a high-tech firm in the 1990s that manufactured data radios that are explosion-proof. He also started his own consulting firm in the late 1990s to serve the communications industry. He has over 20 years of experience in communication systems design. His work has included large and small networks utilizing fiber-optic, wire-line, and wireless technologies. His construction management experience has also included all of these technologies. Dr. Kopp’s system planning experience includes developing 10 year strategic plans for agency-wide communication systems. He has also been involved in the planning and design of communication systems for several primary and emergency operations centers in the United States. His experience includes the preparation of detailed technical specifications and engineers cost estimates. Dr. Kopp has also prepared safety impact studies for the testing of vital communication systems in the railroad industry. His field experience includes on-site construction management, wireless system surveying, system installation and testing, troubleshooting, and performing communication link analyses. Dr. Kopp’s clients have included state DOTs and commuter railroads associated with Intelligent Transportation Systems, public safety agencies, and other government and commercial organizations. Besides systems consulting, Dr. Kopp has also designed wireless communications products, waveforms, and protocols for clients including the US military, an industrial control and telemetry protocol foundation, and a US federal satellite service contractor. Teaching at UNF has given Dr. Kopp an opportunity to give something back to the field of engineering. While in college he always appreciated the professors who came in from industry and felt they offered a more rich engineering educational experience. Dr. Kopp is excited to be able to contribute in this way to the education of engineers at UNF.
