Engaging Students Through Focused Advisement
Peer-Reviewed Presentation at the 2011 NACADA Region 4 Conference (2011)

Abstract

Advising is teaching, but with ever more students and less time, it can be difficult to go beyond quickly discussing registration. The College of Science and Technology at Georgia Southern University has implemented a unique hybrid advising system for students during their first two years. The COST Advising Center consists of both professional and faculty advisors in a central location who meet with each student twice a semester. The first appointment naturally focuses on courses for the following semester. A follow-up appointment is then scheduled that allows time to focus on other important issues unhindered by registration details. Results from these recent advising changes will be presented as well as tips learned on getting the students to voluntarily come to these additional advising appointment and engage in deeper academia.
