Abstract
Interest in global health education and its opportunities has been growing among colleges and universities across the US, particularly among undergraduate programs, as more and more students seek out these programs. Dominican University of California, a small liberal arts institution, has recently undertaken a programmatic transformation with the formation of a new Global Public Health degree. To aid in the development of this new Bachelor of Science program, the seven recommendations put forward by Drain and colleagues were used to inform the process:

  1. Create clear objectives at program inception
  2. Build capacity by starting with a minor or certificate program
  3. Consider challenges of interdepartmental collaborations
  4. Strengthen partnerships
  5. Facilitate practicum or internship experiences
  6. Consider offering international experiences
  7. Ensure strong ethical practices

These recommendations were considered and applied in conjunction with the inter professional global health competencies developed and published by the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH).

Discussed here are the experiences with and lessons learned from the program development process, and the application of these recommendations to that process. The data collection process included a competencies review, external review of programs, qualitative interviews with internship preceptors, potential employers, faculty, and staff, and quantitative surveys of current and past students. From the data analysis emerged key themes that yielded learning outcomes and curricular scaffolding within the degree program. Areas of attention included robust methodological training, career readiness, experiential learning opportunities, and student-driven research.

These results may serve as a guide to others considering building new or expanding capacity within existing global health educational programs, or to those looking to apply the CUGH guidelines to these processes.
