About Brendan O. Baggot

Mr. Baggot, a principal with Schaefer O'Neill, counsels clients in worldwide patent strategy, patent preparation and prosecution, patent law, and patent portfolio management. He practices in the Chemical, Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical, Medical Device and Diagnostics areas.

Prior to forming Schaefer O'Neill, Mr. Baggot practiced in the Life Sciences section of Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman. He performed various tasks related to patent prosecution including all aspects of preparing and prosecuting patent applications.

Before returning to private practice, Mr. Baggot served as a Patent Examiner in the United States Patent and Trademark Office where he was responsible for the examination of patent applications in the field of molecular biology. Mr. Baggot examined technologies including transgenic organisms, lipid metabolism, antisense, RNAi, zinc finger transcription factors, herbicide tolerance, vitamin production, regulatory elements, pest resistance, drought tolerance, plant storage compound yield, antibodies, plant-based production of flavonoid and tocopherol compounds, and gene expression system applications. While an examiner, Mr. Baggot was recognized by the Group Director for implementing an examination efficiency measure.

Prior to serving at the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Mr. Baggot worked for a Forbes company of the year in both molecular biologist and patent scientist roles. As a patent scientist, Mr. Baggot performed competitor, patentability, validity, design-around, portfolio, due diligence, and inventorship studies. He was awarded several in-house marks of distinction as a molecular biologist. Mr. Baggot was also awarded a five-figure grant for the wet chemical synthesis of a novel compound he designed. Another invention he conceived of became the longest term goal of the project he was working on.
Areas of technical experience include Biotechnology, medical diagnostics, medical devices, Molecular Biology, Biofuels, nutraceuticals, Genomics, specialty lipids, biochemical pathway manipulation, animal feed, small arms sub-assemblies, open source hardware and plant storage compound yield.
