From Gang to Gridiron: An action plan for working with athletes from criminal backgrounds

Abstract
As was seen in the case of both Maurice Clarett and Aaron Hernandez, many top athletes in high-profile collegiate football [and basketball] programs arrive on campus with a criminal past, whether they were officially involved with gang activities or not. Collegiate athletic and student life programs are not equipped to handle athletes with these backgrounds and typically do the best they can but it isn't enough. The presentation offers a three-step plan for addressing the psycho/social/emotional needs of college athletes: screening, creating individualized plans, and individual/group treatment...all of it administered and delivered by social workers and licensed counselors, not football coaches or teammates.
