About Robert A. Eckhart

I am currently serving as a Fulbright Scholar at the Pedagogical State University "Ion Creanga" in Moldova. I was here firstly for the 2022-23 academic year, and was invited to return for the 2023-24 year as well. I am training future language teachers and researching the impact of social media/video gaming on language acquisition.

During the pandemic, I stayed put for 2+ years in Columbus, Ohio but remained engaged and involved internationally. I served as a Visiting Professor with Yangtze University and Guangxi Normal University, and gave virtual presentations and workshops in Indonesia, Moldova, Turkey, Belarus, Russia, etc. In the 2019-20 academic year, I was a Guest Lecturer at the Sorbonne-Nouvelle (U of Paris III) and Paris-Descartes (U of Paris V), and a visiting instructor at Xidian University and Hunan Agricultural University. Before that, I completed two other Fulbright grants. The first was a Fulbright Scholar grant at Minsk State Linguistics University in 2018. I was a Visiting Professor in the Teacher Training Institute. This rewarding experience enabled me to spend a semester collaborating on professional development activities with English teachers ranging from primary school to higher education from all over Belarus. The second was a Fulbright Specialist grant in 2019 with Belarusian State University, in the Economics and Management Department, teaching Business Communication.

From 2012-2018, I was the American Director of the WHU-OSU Center for American Culture, a project funded by the U.S. Department of State, which is on the campus of Wuhan University. We received six grants for a total of $425,000 from the U.S. Embassy in Beijing to support our cultural exchange activities and enrich the lives of faculty, staff, and students at Ohio State through cultural and academic exchange trips to China. The goal was to develop awareness of and affinity for Chinese culture and Chinese students at our university.

I taught for 20+ years at Ohio State and was the Executive Director of the Combined ESL Programs from 2013-2015, leading a staff of 50 teachers offering courses to thousands of students. I have taught first-year composition to domestic students and international students, intermediate essay writing, legal writing to pre-law undergraduates and international LLM students at the Moritz College of Law, U.S. culture and pronunciation to international graduate students and MBA students at the Fisher College of Business, and English for Occupational Purposes (EOP) classes to post-docs and employees at the OSU Wexner Medical Center.

I have also been the Program Manager for Summer English Communication Programs from 2004-2019 and in China, Indonesia, and Turkey. These programs operated at five state teaching universities in Indonesia (in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Gorontalo, and Padang), two universities in Turkey (Ataturk University and Erzincan University), and in our most recent year the China programs operated in Xi'an, Suzhou, Wuhan, and Changsha.
