Abstract
Little has been written about the development of the Swedish Royal Opera under Gustaf III in the years immediately following the successful production in January, 1773, of Franceso Uttini's (1723 - 1793) and Johan Wellander's (1735 - 1783) Thetis och Pele'e. Though much is known about the repertory, the reasons for the choices of works to be staged are not always clear. The inauguration of Gustavian opera with Thetis, a rather ambitious piece in five acts, had the good fortune to begin at the point where other national theaters had just arrived, with a rather sophisticated work that brought the art to the public in a perfected form.
