Designing New Energy System Components
Ames Laboratory Annual Department of Energy Review (2012)
  • Benjamin M. Sloan, Iowa State University
The topic discussed how the metaphors that are used when designing a product are restrictive not allowing for alternative designs to be considered. Digital manufacturing specifically three-dimensional printing are disruptive manufacturing technologies, now being able to control manufacturing from atom to item. The result of this disruption is a shift in how we apply metaphors of old manufacturing onto these new topics without these restrictions either by forming new metaphors or adapting metaphors of old.
