About Dr. Beatrice St. Laurent

After receiving her PhD from Harvard University in the Department of the History of Art and Architecture, Beatrice St. Laurent, spent two years in Jerusalem at the W.F. Albright Institute for Archaeological Research and one year in Amman at the American Center of Oriental Research. Those three years resulted in multiple publications on the Ottoman restorations of the Dome of the Rock. Since 1996, Dr. St. Laurent has been teaching at Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts in the Department of Art and Art History such courses as Islamic Art and Architecture, Monuments as Cultural Symbols and Emblems of Power, the History of Photography, and Orientalism. Her most recent research focuses on the modern and contemporary restorations of the Dome of the Rock and al-Aqsa Mosque and is currently working on the seventh century architectural and urban development of early Islamic Jerusalem, specifically under the first Umayyad caliph Mu’awiya. For her research, she has received various prestigious grants, such as two National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) fellowships, a senior Council for the American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) fellowship, a Van Berchem Foundation fellowship, and has recently been appointed the Seymour Gitin Distinguished Professorship at the Albright Institute in Jerusalem.
