Abstract
Background:
Patients experience ventilator support for a variety of reasons of which respiratory distress is major. Irrespective of the reason for ventilator support commonly known as life support; it is a scary experience usually causing anxiety for the patient and family. An in-depth understanding of what the patient is experiencing will enable the nurse to alleviate some of the patient’s and family’s anxiety that usually accompany this patient management. Several studies have addressed the lived experiences of patients on ventilator identifying some of the factors influencing the experiences. There is a need to synthesize the findings from these studies so that themes and/or relevant factors that will guide nursing intervention will be identified. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to perform a thematic synthesis of research related to the experiences of patients on ventilators/life support.
Aim:
To perform a thematic synthesis of research related to the experiences of patients on ventilators/life support.
Methods:
Electronic searches were conducted using the following databases: Medline, Cinahl, and Cochrane Library. Each database was searched from 1982 until March 2012 (30 years). The following search terms were utilized: lived experience, experience, life support, ventilators, ventilator support.  Associated terms were also used. The internet was searched for relevant proceedings.  From the information obtained from the abstract and title, irrelevant articles were eliminated. The remaining studies will be read in their entirety.  The majorly qualitative research articles will be analyzed using thematic synthesis involving three stages:  coding of the text; development of themes; and generation of analytical themes (Thomas and Harden, 2008).
Results:
The result of initial work is presented here, which consisted of identifying articles to be included in the synthesis. The projected time for completion of study is August 15, 2012.
