Abstract

We construct the effective Lagrangian for a noninteracting scalar field at nonzero temperature in curved spacetime. Metric fluctuations are evaluated, resulting in an energy momentum tensor which has the form expected for an imperfect fluid. Such fluctuations are found to be unstable (for most values of the cosmological constant) with an exponential growth characterized by a Jeans mass squared which is twice the classical value.
