Abstract

Immunization through vaccines is one of the most effective means of preventing disease, disability, and death from infectious disease. Nurses can play an important role in helping to prevent infectious disease during pregnancy and postpartum by better understanding which vaccinations can be used in pregnancy and during breastfeeding. This article discusses 21 adult vaccinations and the diseases they prevent and provides nursing considerations to ensure safety and efficacy through appropriate vaccination scheduling, administration, storage/handling, and patient education.
