AbstractThe period of teaching practice is an important part of preservice physical education teachers’ education, with significant consequences for their professional development. However, the transition from university to school classes is a reality shock for the majority of them, with fundamental difficulties during the application of theory to practice. The aim of the present research is the presentation of the “Lesson Study” model, which is a model of systematic and cooperative analysis of teaching, as it was applied on the teaching practice of preservice physical education teachers of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Science (DPESS), of the University of Athens in Greece. The basic objective was the determination of the unseen aspects of the physical education teaching process and through this the detection of those elements that shape the identity of an effective lesson. Eight third-year university female students of the DPESS took part in the research. With the guidance of their supervising teacher they conducted their teaching practice at a secondary school in Athens for five consecutive weeks, according to the “Lesson Study” model. Data collection was completed with the use of interviews and written evaluation reports that were submitted on a website. From the results it was proved that the application of the “Lesson Study” model affected positively the eight students’ teaching practice experiences, promoting their subject knowledge, their cooperation and creative thought and finally their self reflection on and about their teaching actions and habits.
