About Prof. SEWELL, Andrew John

Andrew Sewell’s research in applied linguistics and sociolinguistics focuses on various aspects of English as an international language, including English accents in international communication, local varieties of English, pronunciation teaching and testing, and theoretical approaches to the study of English in the world. His work has appeared in journals such as World Englishes, ELT Journal, International Journal of Applied Linguistics and the Journal of Second Language Pronunciation. His first book, English Pronunciation Models in a Globalized World, was published by Routledge in 2016. 

He began his teaching career with Voluntary Service Overseas, a British development organisation, and spent two years as the only foreign English teacher in a small town in China’s Shaanxi province. He then taught Tibetan students in Qinghai province, and has also worked in South Korea, Macau and the UK. His English language teaching experience includes teacher training, materials development and language assessment, and he has been an examiner for several international English tests.
