This paper identifies and describes the essence and characteristics of the gadaa/siiqqee system (Oromo democracy) before the colonization of the Oromo people and the incorporation of their country, Oromia, into Ethiopia, and why the Oromo are currently struggling for the renaissance of indigenous Oromo democratic institutions.
