Professor and Chair Department of Biology and Chemistry
I am Professor of Genetics and Molecular Biology, Chair of the Department of Biology and Chemistry and Special Assistant to the Dean of the College of Science, at California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB). I hold a BS in Microbiology and Immunology from UCLA, a Ph.D. in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology from UC Santa Cruz, and a certificate in Science Communication from UC Santa Cruz. I have extensive research experience from the University of California San Francisco, where I worked as a post doctoral fellow and Tularik Inc., a biotechnology firm now owned by Amgen. I also held positions as a scientific analyst with the law firm Lieff, Cabraser, Heimann and Bernstein LLP in San Francisco, and content science editor with CTB McGraw Hill in Monterey
I have been a freelance science writer since 2001 and published articles in venues like Science magazine, Natural History magazine, and The San Francisco Chronicle. I also freelance as a science editorial and writing consultant for Riverside Publishing.
I teach Genetics, Advanced Cell Biology, Issues and Ethics in Biology, Eukaryotic Molecular Biology laboratory, and the Biology capstone courses. In my laboratory, I manage research projects that focus on the control of cell size in S. cerevisiae, in collaboration with Dr. Douglas Kellogg at UC Santa Cruz.
I am the molecular biology track advisor. I am also the faculty mentor for the TRIBETA biological honor society and the South Asian Association. I and am on the Strategic Planning Council for the CSU Program for Research in Biotechnology and have been a member of the national Genomics Education Partnership for more than eight years. I am also the Western District Director for the TRIBETA National Biological Honor Society. I mentor McNair, UROC, and LSAMP Scholars and work closely with the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Center at CSUMB.
As Co-PI of the NIH funded IRACDA program at CSUMB and UC Santa Cruz, I help mentor posdoctoral fellows in best pedagogical practices. That, linked with my lead role in the Faculty Learning Program (FLP) at CSUMB, provides me with a strong background in supporting teaching and mentoring at our institution. I also help run the Genentech funded GAIN program that provides underrepresented CSUMB students with research experiences at our sister institution UCSC.
