About Ann Reed

Professor Reed is currently investigating the most common (and perhaps hardest to define) English word “the”, focusing on non-definite uses such as “take the bus everywhere” or “call for the nurse”.  In earlier work on a still debated question, Professor Reed co-authored with Sharon Zuber “The Politics of Grammar Handbooks: Generic He and Singular They”.  While working at William & Mary (1976-2014), Reed was Director of the Linguistic department for multiple terms, Chair of the English department from 1992-1995, and Associate Chair of the English department from 2001-2002. What Professor Reed loved most about teaching was helping students learn that linguistics, like language, is an open and ever-changing enterprise.
