Abstract
After you have read this chapter, you should be able to Identify the dimensions of literacy. Explain the importance of teachers developing a set of beliefs and the role the play in literacy learning and instructions. Describe how young children learn about language and literacy and the connection between language and early literacy learning. Elaborate upon the nature of emergent literacy (i.e., that oral language, reading, writing, etc., are developmental and vary across individuals and over time). Define and explain the purpose(s), use(s), and modification(s) necessary to use instructional approaches to meet the learners' needs found within the classroom. Discuss the value of supporting children's literacy learning at multiple levels.
